Across northeastern British Columbia, newspaper closures have left a small network of journalists working to preserve local reporting. In the first installment of a new series, The Tyee examines how independent reporters continue serving communities despite thin resources and uncertain business models.
Among them is Trent Ernst, who started Tumbler RidgeLines after his town’s former newspaper closed. He publishes online and in print, produces morning video updates and supplements the operation with other work.
The reporting explores both the value of these local outlets and their vulnerability: residents depend on them for verified information, while the people producing it face financial strain and burnout. It offers a community-level look at what survives after established newspapers disappear.
