By: E&P Staff The South Dakota Newspaper Association, which represents the state's newspapers on public policy issues and offers services in ad placement, clipping and press release distribution, announced a new program that digitizes all pages of every South Dakota newspaper -- through a partnership with digital imaging company ColorMax Inc., Paynesville, Minn.
The program digitally captures images of the newspapers' printed pages and converts them into text-searchable PDF files that are accessible online. SDNA's newspaper clipping bureau will use the program to electronically search and deliver newspaper clips.
SDNA also is creating an online database of newspaper pages that will be commercially available to the public to view and search most of the state's newspapers. Participating newspapers will be able to offer their own current pages on subscription-based Web sites. The association also will offer to digitize members' old newspapers and make them available commercially online.
SDNA General Manger David Bordewyk called the program the first of its kind in the country. "By creating a statewide digital archive of South Dakota newspapers," he said in a statement, "we are breaking new ground that will offer significant revenue opportunities" for the papers now and in the future.
Since Jan. 1, SDNA has been digitally capturing and archiving every page of every South Dakota newspaper for use by its clipping service. Besides the clipping service, said Bordewyk, "we will now be able to deliver electronic tearsheets to advertisers for our association's advertising placement service."
