By: E&P Staff Alternative newsweekly group Creative Loafing has named Marty Petty, former publisher of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times and The Hartford (Conn.) Courant, its new CEO.

Petty succeeds Richard W. Gilbert, who served as interim CEO this fall since the company emerged from bankruptcy under the new ownership of New York investment firm Atalaya Capital Management LP.

Petty, 56, began her newspaper career in 1983 at The Kansas City Star and Kansas City Times. In addition to managing the company?s publications, she will take a spot on its board of directors. Gilbert will also remain with the company as a board member.

Gilbert praised his successor, saying in a statement, ?She has solid journalistic values honed from her early career in the newsroom and her longstanding commitment to hard-hitting journalism.?

Creative Loafing publishes six weekly alternative newspapers in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, Tampa and Sarasota, as well as various Web sites such as www.straightdope.com.

"I'm invigorated by the possibilities to deepen relationships with our readers and advertisers and expand our influence in our communities,? Petty said in a statement. ?This is an opportunity to lead a truly unique company in one of the most economically challenging times we have known."
