By: New York's Village Voice Media and NT Media of Phoenix announced an agreement Wednesday that effectively ends alternative newspaper wars in Los Angeles and Cleveland.
Under the terms of the agreement, NT Media is closing
New Times Los Angeles and Village Voice Media shuts the
Cleveland Free Times today. That leaves NT Media running
Cleveland Scene and Village Voice Media running
LA Weekly.
The two chains will take over certain assets of the newspapers being killed.
In a joint statement, Village Voice CEO David Schneiderman and NT CEO and Chairman Jim Larkin said: "Though we regret closing newspapers, through this transaction we have been able to strengthen our respective competitive position in two important markets. As a result, both
LA Weekly and
Cleveland Scene will better serve the needs of the readers and advertisers in their communities. We are proud of the accomplishments of the staffs at
Cleveland Free Times and
New Times Los Angeles and hope that many of them will find employment in our respective companies."
Village Voice Media owns alternative weeklies in a number of markets, including the flagship
Village Voice in New York. NT Media owns similar papers in major markets such as Phoenix, Denver, Miami, and Houston.
