By: Staff Reports Big Winners Include 'Dallas Observer,' 'Gambit Weekly'
Winners of the Sixth Annual Alternative Newsweekly Awards were
announced Friday in New Orleans at the Association of Alternative
Newsweekly (AAN) annual convention.
The awards recognize both excellence in journalism and graphic
design among AAN's 118 member papers in Canada and the United
States.
The Dallas Observer, Chicago Reader, and LA
Weekly each won two first-place awards in the large-paper
division (circulation above 54,000).
Gambit Weekly of New Orleans led all winners with four
first-place awards in the small circulation (below 54,000)
division. The convention host paper won in column (Andrei
Codrescu), cover design (Dora Sison & Ben Delery), media
reporting ("Investigating the Investigator," Allen Johnson Jr.),
and sports reporting ("Cold Warriors," Scott Jordan).
The Texas Observer of Austin won three first-place awards
along with three others in small circulation.
