By: E&P Staff Publishing systems developer Advanced Publishing Technology, Burbank, Calif., has created an application that allows newspapers place print-only contests on their Web sites.
EZ$Contests is a stand-alone application. Newspapers provide APT with contest information such as images, rules and dates, and APT creates an online version of the contest with a link placed on the newspaper's Web site.
Online readers who click on the contest link have the option of paying to enter contests and to vote in them, explains Diane Duran, online product manager at APT, thus generating revenue for the newspaper. APT processes all payments, and gives customers access to an administrative tool with which they can manage the online contests. The application's revenue-share pricing means there are no upfront costs.
Duran said that baby contests hosted last fall by APT at nine newspapers raked in thousands of dollars each and increased traffic at newspaper Web sites. APT also encourages papers to find sponsors for the contests to further increase revenue.
