By: The 2002 Batten Awards for civic journalism, funded by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts, were announced today.
The
Savannah (Ga.)
Morning News won this year's Batten Award for Excellence in Civic Journalism, which includes a $10,000 prize. The newspaper won for its "Vision 2010" project, which included a large citizen task force investigating local education improvement. The project resulted in volunteer support for the schools and the creation of a community foundation to raise money for education.
The runner-up was
The Cincinnati Enquirer for a community reporting project on race relations.
Other winners included the
Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Wisconsin State Journal, The Herald of Everett, Wash., GothamGazette.com, and 360degrees.org.
The winners will be honored April 22 at a symposium at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
