The Akron Beacon Journal announced Friday that one of its former managing editors will return to the Ohio daily as general manager.

James N. Crutchfield starts his new role in January, overseeing advertising, marketing, circulation, production, and information systems.
Crutchfield has been in a Knight Ridder executive development program since 1997, after almost five years as executive editor of the Long Beach, Calif., Press-Telegram, which was sold by Knight Ridder in 1997.
With more than 30 years' experience on the editorial side, Crutchfield said he's still learning about the business side of journalism.
