California Paper Cutting 5% of Work Force

Posted
By: The Monterey County Herald has cut seven full-time jobs and one part-time position in various departments, reducing its workforce by about 5 percent.

"The small reduction in workforce is aimed at trimming costs amid a downturn in the newspaper industry," said Gary Omernick, the newspaper's president and publisher. "Despite that trend, our readership continues to grow as we transition from a newspaper to a multimedia company."

The paper did not disclose the number of newsroom jobs affected.

The Herald, which was acquired by Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc. last year, is the latest newspaper to reduce staff as the industry seeks to reduce costs amid declining advertising and circulation. The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribute and Baltimore Sun announced job cuts last week.
