Columnist Smith Hempstone Dies

By: E&P Staff Smith Hempstone, a conservative syndicated columnist who also served as U.S. ambassador to Kenya, died yesterday in Bethesda, Md., at the age of 77. He had complications from diabetes, according to The Washington Post.

Hempstone, who was ambassador from 1989 to 1993, had previously covered Kenya for the Chicago Daily News. After leaving that paper, he went on to work for the Washington Star and the Washington Times, and write several books.

His column, "Our Times," appeared in about 90 newspapers at its peak.
