Conference Board Data Shows Help Wanted Slow Down

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Conference Board's Help-Wanted Advertising Index fell one point in November to 21 compared to October. The index stood at 29 in November 2006.

All nine major regions where the organization measures help-wanted print ad volume in 51 major newspapers experienced declines. The worst occurred in the Pacific region, down 12.8%; the Mountain region, down 12.5%; and the West North Central region, down 12.4%.

"The forward indicators of labor market activity offer little hope that the labor market will be spared," Conference Board labor economist Ken Goldstein said in a statement. "The latest readings on print want-ad volume show some slowing in recent months, after slowly losing steam through the spring and summer."

Meanwhile the Conference Board reported that job vacancies advertised online rose 6% in December compared to the same period a year ago but it dropped 13% from November.

"The period between Thanksgiving and the end of the year is typically slow in terms of hiring, sot it's not surprising to see a large decline in the number of job ads last month," Gad Levanon, an economist at the Conference Board, said in a statement.

Despite the uptick in the year-over-year increase, the "data suggest that the slow pace in the labor market will continue in the months ahead," Levanon warned.

All nine U.S. regions experienced drops in online advertising vacancies from November to December.
