Cox Consolidates Texas Printing and Packaging

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Tribune-Herald will move its printing and packaging operations on July 13 from Waco, Texas, to the larger Austin American-Statesman, eliminating 25 full-time and 18 part-time jobs in the process, according to the T-H.

Cox Enterprises owns and is trying to sell both dailies. The Tribune Herald circulates 34,609 copies, 40,861 on Sunday; the American-Statesman circulates 152,691 copies, 185,204 on Sunday.

"We believe this change will create significant cost efficiencies and will better position us for success moving forward," Publisher Belinda Gaudet told her paper. The 34,609-circulation (40,861 Sunday) Tribune-Herald will offer severance packages for affected workers, continuing base pay and benefits for eight to 26 weeks depending on longevity, she added.

Page files will be sent electronically to Austin, which has newer Goss and KBA presses and controls and will handle inserting before copies are trucked to Waco for distribution.

Gaudet said she hopes to retain various contract print jobs, including the Baylor Lariat, after printing transfers to Austin.
