'Dear Abby' As Literacy Tool

Posted
By: E&P Staff A Japanese publishing company has produced a book of "Dear Abby" columns in Japanese with English translations. It's designed to teach English and English idioms.

"Letters from teachers worldwide seem to suggest that students relate to the universal language and intrigue of relationship issues," said "Dear Abby" writer Jeanne Phillips of Universal Press Syndicate.

She cited, by way of example, this letter: "I am a professor of English in France and often use your column to teach adult conversational English." Phillips added that U.S. teachers use "Dear Abby" to help immigrants improve their English speaking and reading skills.
