By: E&P Staff Warner Home Video has signed a home-video-distribution deal for the "Peanuts" library of more than 50 TV specials, The Hollywood Reporter reported today.
Also, Warner plans to create direct-to-video features based on Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" comic for release under the Warner Premiere label, as well as short original programming for digital distribution via wireless and other platforms.
Warner made the multiyear deal with United Media (which continues to syndicate reruns of the "Peanuts" strip), Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, and Lee Mendelson Film Productions.
"We think it is a perennial brand, and we see consistent sales throughout the year on it," said Jeff Brown, senior vice president and general manager of television and franchise product at Warner Home Video, as quoted in The Hollywood Reporter story.
Brown said "Peanuts" specials (long available on DVD and videocassette) such as "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" will be remastered and released on DVD with new bonus features and new packaging. Coming first is "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" (Jan. 15) followed by "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" (Feb. 26).
Jean Schulz, widow of the "Peanuts" creator, said: "After meeting the Warner creative team, it's clear that they have an understanding of and dedication to classic animation, which we think will make them a great distribution home for 'Peanuts.' "
Distribution of "Peanuts" specials had previously rested with Paramount Home Entertainment for more than a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- which is owned by The Nielsen Company that also owns Editor & Publisher.
