By: Jim Rosenberg Dow Jones & Co. has purchased 14 Kodak Trendsetter News 150 thermal platesetters and 17 Kodak Prinergy Evo workflow systems for its printing plants in Chicopee, Mass.; Bowling Green, Ohio; LaGrange, Ga.; Dallas; Palo Alto, Calif.; and South Brunswick, N.J. Prinergy Evo also will be installed at the Dow Jones advertising services location in Orlando, Fla.
When E&P reported in June that Dow Jones had decided to adopt thermal computer-to-plate output for The Wall Street Journal and Barron's, Production Vice President Larry Hoffman said conversion from film imagesetters would be phased, with 15 plants receiving two platesetters each and the two others receiving three each.
Dow Jones National Production Director Paul Cousineau confirmed that today's announcement represents the first phase of the same two- and three-machine CTP implementation.
The Trendsetter News is available in six models, ranging in speed from 60 plates per hour to more than 240 plates per hour. The platesetter is available with semiautomatic or fully automated plate loading and unloading. Kodak attributes the devices' machine-to-machine accuracy to consistent and repeatable halftone dot structures achieved by its Squarespot imaging heads and the binary nature of thermal imaging.
Each of the 14 CTP devices will have a Prinergy Evo RIP, with the remaining three workflow systems available for development purposes, according to Cousineau. "This will allow us to output the same dot on every imager," he said, adding that the object is to maintain the consistency of the completely linearized PDF workflow that has been in place since 2000.
Prinergy Evo is a flexible, color-managed PDF workflow with late-stage editing and imposition, and screening optimize Trendsetter output.
