Dow Jones & Co. Inc. won the rights to an Internet address by filing
a complaint at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO),
The Associated Press reports.
Dow Jones filed its complaint after a site called Down Jones Update
began publishing at www.dowjonesonline.com.
The Geneva-based WIPO assigned the case to arbitrator Richard W. Page
who said in his ruling that the URL 'is identical with and confusingly
similar to the trademark Dow Jones and its variations.' He said that
Down Jones Update of Baltimore had used the domain name in bad faith.
Down Jones Update did not show up to defend itself, choosing instead to
ignore the notices regarding the complaint, according to the AP.
Page ordered that the Internet address be transferred to Dow Jones. As
of Tuesday, the URL dowjonesonline.com was no longer operative.
The WIPO was formed last year to offer people an alternative to fighting cybersquatting through costly legal battles.
