An Egyptian court ordered independent news outlet Mada Masr closed and fined editor-in-chief Lina Attalah about $53,400. She was released after paying, The Associated Press reports.
During release procedures, her lawyers learned of a separate one-year prison sentence issued in absentia in 2024. Mada Masr said she intends to appeal. The closure order threatens one of Egypt’s remaining independent news organizations.
