By: Dave Astor Larry Flynt is among the scheduled speakers at the April 21-24 Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) convention in Lexington, Ky.
In a 1980s issue of Hustler magazine, the Kentucky-born Flynt ran a cartoon parody of Jerry Falwell that turned into a major First Amendment court case.
Oliver Stone's "The People v. Larry Flynt" film will be screened at the Kentucky Theatre, as will a documentary about editorial cartoonist Etta Hulme of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram and Newspaper Enterprise Association.
Also slated to speak at the meeting are "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau of Universal Press Syndicate and various editorial cartoonists such as Pat Oliphant of Universal, Tony Auth of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Universal, and Rex Babin of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee and King Features Syndicate. Babin organized one of the convention's panels -- on local cartooning. Chip Beck will talk about doing cartoons in Iraq, while Khalil Bendib will discuss "drawing while Arab." Comedienne Elayne Boosler, a big fan of cartoons, will give the keynote address.
The convention is being hosted by Joel Pett of the Lexington Herald-Leader and Universal. AAEC's president is Mike Ritter of Arizona's Tribune Newspapers and King.
