Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernethy says larger, financially stronger media companies can better support independent journalism and protect free speech. Speaking at The Media Institute’s Free Speech America Gala on Oct. 27, he argued that local broadcasters need the resources to investigate powerful institutions, provide emergency coverage and compete with technology platforms, Matthew Keys reports for The Desk.
Abernethy challenged the idea that increasing the number of outlets necessarily produces a better-informed public. He contended that financially strained news organizations may lack the capacity to pursue demanding accountability reporting, framing consolidation as a means of sustaining that work.
He also pointed to streaming’s potential to expand local coverage beyond traditional television schedules, citing Fox-owned WTTG in Washington. His remarks add a prominent broadcaster’s voice to the debate over whether greater ownership scale strengthens local journalism.
