FNP Print and Publishing, publisher of the Frederick (Md.) News Post, recently went live with the latest release of Alwan Color Expertise's CMYK Optimizer Eco, reducing ink costs, make-ready time and drying time and improving consistency color reproduction.
The investment paid for itself in less than two months, according to prepress workflow solutions developer and systems integrator Fusion Systems International, a division of LDR International, Inc., Portland, Ore., which sells the ink optimizer and PDF standardization products of Alwan, Lyon, France.
"The color quality and consistency was immediately noticeable, and we are realizing a savings of 18%," Production Systems Administrator Sixton Kadel said in a statement. "We now benefit from less ink on the sheet, less show-through, and tight adherence to color standards -- an issue of growing importance to our advertisers and commercial customers."
PDF files come from various sources and contain elements with different color spaces and separation options. As Alwan's CMYK Eco solution processes files, they are set to industry ISO color standards and harmonized with actual press conditions, ensuring color reproduction accuracy, compliance with industry color standards and maximum ink optimization savings while enhancing print quality, according to Fusion Systems.
CMYK Eco ink optimizer has built-in industry color-standards profiles, automatic and dynamic dot-gain compensation, TAC correction, optimal black generation for print quality and an ink-reduction cost savings report generator.
Automatic application of color standardization to files also can be incorporated into the proofing process to ensure tighter correlation between hardcopy proofing and the press make-ready. At FNP, Alwan's Eco solution also manages file color standardization on wide-format proofers, providing a "tightly calibrated color match between the proofs and the final printed work," Kadel said. "It has helped to further streamline makeready [and] cut operating costs."
