By: Jim Rosenberg Goss International and manroland announced Wednesday that they resolved their U.S. patent-infringement litigation Tuesday. Court records show that jury selection was slated for Tuesday in the case involving web offset press sleeve blanket technology.
Terms of the agreement are confidential. In a brief statement, the press manufacturers "acknowledged that the resolution was in the best interest of their companies and their customers, allowing them to offer their full press portfolios to the worldwide marketplace."
Filed in late 2003, the Goss lawsuit alleged that the manroland Rotoman S press infringed three U.S. patents held by Goss International for the tubular or sleeve blanket technology used in its Sunday press models.
After mediation efforts failed two years ago, federal district court in New Hampshire granted a Goss motion for summary judgment. A trial to determine damages was set to begin last Oct. That apparently never happened, and neither company immediately replied to questions concerning proceedings since then.
Developed by Heidelberg before the U.S. unit of the German press maker was acquired by Goss, the first gapless Sunday press shipped in 1993. More than 2,000 units have shipped since then.
