Guild Teed Off in Talks with Thomson Reuters

Posted
By: E&P Staff The New York Newspaper Guild said it filed two unfair labor practice charges alleging that Thomson Reuters is prohibiting workers from what the Guild calls a "long-standing practice" of wearing red union tee shirts during contract negotiations.

The Guild and Thomson Reuters have been bargaining to replace a contract that expires at the end of this month.

In its filing with the National Labor Relations Board, the Guild claims Thomson Reuters Corp. violated federal labor law by banning only Newspaper Guild tee shirts and by implementing a dress code without bargaining with the union.

The New York Guild, Local 31003 of the Communications Workers of America, represents Thomson Reuters' U.S.-based staff in news, photography, television, technology and other areas.

Shortly before a bargaining session, the company told staffers not to wear the red t-shirts if those shirts could be captured by television cameras using the New York and Washington newsrooms as backdrops to Thomson Reuters' Insider Web-based video product, according to a Guild announcement distributed late Tuesday.

Thomson Reuters spokespersons were not immediately available for comment.
