By: E&P Staff The Conference Board reported its Help-Wanted Advertising Index fell one point to 23 in October compared to September. Year-over-year the index dropped 20% from 29.
All nine regions experienced declines with the steepest occurring in the pacific (down 18%), west north central (down 14.7%), and east north central (down 14.3%) regions.
Conference Board Labor Economist Ken Goldstein attributed the slide to the real estate slump, higher gas and grocery prices, and the sqeeze on credit.
"The Leading Economic Indicators are pointing to little change in the coming months. The latest reading on the Consumer Confidence Index suggests people are beginning to fear for their job security and for the pace of wage growth," Goldstein said in a statement.
Online job vacancies dropped in October as well, 2.5% compared with September.
