By: E&P Staff The Conference Board reported that its help-wanted advertising index fell six points in July compared to the same month a year ago. The index now stands at 25; it was at 26 in June.
All nine major U.S. regions measured by the Board were down. The largest declines occurred in the West North Central region, down 17.4%; Mountain, down 16.6%; and Pacific, down 16.3%.
"Despite housing problems, higher gas prices, higher grocery prices, even higher property taxes for some households, the consumer sector has been holding up all year because the labor market has held up," Ken Goldstein, an economist with the Conference Board, said in a statement.
Goldstein acknowledged that both print and online job volume have slowed. However, he notes that there is no suggestion that the economy is slipping into a recession.
In July, online help-wanted advertising fell 4.6% compared to June due mostly to seasonality.
The Conference Board surveys help-wanted print advertising volume in 51 major newspapers across the U.S. each month.
