By: (AP) A subsidiary of a Spanish newspaper publisher Thursday said it will launch four Spanish-language daily newspapers in Texas in June, joining the battle for the nation's fast-growing Hispanic population.
The newspapers will be published in Houston, San Antonio, Austin and the Lower Rio Grande Valley by Meximerica Media, a unit of Recoletos Grupo de Comunicacion S.A.
The newspapers, called "Rumbo," will be tabloid-sized and aimed at Hispanics between the ages of 21 and 45. They will include Mexican, U.S. and international news, as well as sports, entertainment and lifestyle content.
In response to the surging Hispanic market in northern Texas, Belo, publisher of The Dallas Morning News, and Knight Ridder, parent of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, recently boosted their Spanish-language offerings to readers.
Belo last September launched a Spanish daily called Al Dia in north Texas. Knight Ridder recently expanded its La Estrella, which has been published for several years, to five days a week from two.
Recoletos invested $16.5 million this year to fund the launch of its first four newspapers, the company said.
Recoletos is the publisher of Expansion, a leading business newspaper in Spain. Recoletos is controlled by British-based Pearson PLC, publisher of the Financial Times of London.
