By: E&P Staff NorthWest News Group Internet Editor Mike Weiler, who oversees news content on the group's newspaper Web sites and niche publications, has been named Local Innovator of the Year in a national contest of community newspaper sites.

Suburban Newspapers of America honored the Illinois-based NorthWest group with five national awards, including Weiler's. The group includes the Kane County (Ill.) Chronicle, the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, Ill. (where Weiler is based), and several weekly papers and Web sites.

SNA recognized the company's Web sites for their navigability, wealth of multimedia content, and interactive options such as reader polls, blogs, and discussion threads.

"It's certainly been a team effort," said Weiler, as quoted in the Chronicle. "We're looking to be creative and unique, and we try to be ahead of the curve. ... We try to look for things that readers will enjoy."
