Iron Range GM Asbach dead at 78

The Mesabi Daily News, Virginia, Minn., reports that its retired general manager, L.R. ""Larry'' Asbach, died June 17 in a Stuart, Fla., hospital of complications from emphysema and pneumonia. He was 78.

Burial was planned for his home town of Ashland, Wis., where he sold newspapers as a boy and later graduated from Northland College.

Asbach worked briefly as a schoolteacher and served with the U.S. Army occupation forces in Germany after World War II before joining
the Ashland Daily Press as manager. He moved to the Mesabi Daily News in 1967 as general manager. During his tenure, the paper moved to offset printing and a new plant.
