The trust, established by the will of legendary publisher William Randolph Hearst, owns Hearst Corp., which currently controls 15 daily and 49 weekly newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle and Albany (N.Y.) Times Union. Hearst also owns interests in 43 daily newspapers and 72 non-dailies owned by MediaNews Group. These newspapers include The Denver Post and The Salt Lake Tribune.

Asher currently is responsible for all of Hearst Corporation's legal affairs. He also oversees Hearst's Interactive Media Group, which primarily invests in new media and media technology businesses.
Before arriving at Hearst, Asher was managing partner and chairman of the executive committee in the law firm of Rogers & Wells, which he joined in 1974 after graduating from New York University School of Law.
