Journal Communications Oct. Revenue Dips

By: Journal Communications Inc. said Tuesday that October revenue from continuing operations dropped 10.7 percent mostly on a decline in broadcast political and issue ad sales.

The media company, which publishes the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reported ad revenue for the period ended Oct. 28 slid 12.5 percent to $33.8 million from $38.6 million.

Revenue at the publishing segment, which includes daily newspaper and community newspapers and shoppers, slipped 6.7 percent to $21 million from $22.5 million in the prior year. Ad revenue for the division sagged 9.6 percent to $15.6 million.

Advertising revenue at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel daily newspaper fell 10.1 percent to $12.6 million.

Total revenue at radio and television stations in the broadcasting segment slumped 14.9 percent to $18.1 million from $21.3 million. Television group revenue declined 18.4 percent to $11.6 million primarily on less political and issue advertising revenue, partially offset by increases in local and national ad sales. Radio group revenue slipped 7.9 percent to $6.6 million on less political and issue ad sales as well as softness in local and national advertising.

Journal Communications publishes 46 community newspapers and shoppers in Wisconsin and Florida. The company also owns and operates 35 radio stations and 10 television stations in 12 states and operates two television stations under local marketing agreements.
