By: Jennifer Saba Journalism Online, the company founded to help publishers monetize content, is going after non-profit news producers.
The Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) is the first of this type of organization to sign up with Journalism Online. The company is providing tools that can help with fund-raising, including online membership programs, micro-donations, and donations dedicated to certain stories or coverage areas. The idea is to form a network of Journalism Online non-profit affiliates, which allow for users to have one universal account.
Steven Brill, co-founder of Journalism Online, said in a statement about IWPR: "In thinking about how vital their work is, and how much support they need, it struck me that this is a way they might be able to broaden and solidify their financial base beyond the conventional hunt for grants and big-giver donations."
Journalism Online recently announced that more than
170 dailies have signed on as "affiliate partners." They partners were not revealed in the press release though the Los Angeles Times
found that McClatchy, Tribune and Dow Jones did not sign with Journalism Online. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did,
reported Nieman Journalism Lab.
