King Features Syndicate Launches 'Captionary' Application

Posted
By: E&P Staff King Features Syndicate today announced the launch of ?Captionary,? a user-generated fill-in-the-caption application that will be available to its client newspapers.

?Captionary? allows readers to submit humorous subtitles to accompany original panels created exclusively for Comics Kingdom by such cartoonists as Dan Piraro (?Bizarro?), Mike Peters (?Mother Goose & Grimm?), Hilary Price (?Rhymes With Orange?), Vic Lee (?Pardon My Planet?) and Rina Piccolo (?Tina?s Groove?).

Comics Kingdom?s current partners, among them The Times-Union in Albany, N.Y., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, New York?s Daily News, The Denver Post, San Antonio Express-News, the Las Vegas Review Journal and many others, will be able to run ?Captionary? on their sites to help draw page views and increase incremental ad rates.

The ?Captionary? feature encourages users ?to compete against each other in a fun environment,? King Features Comics Editor Brendan Burford said in a statement. ?Comics Kingdom offers the perfect opportunity for fans to create their own spin on professionally produced comic artwork by their favorite cartoonists.?

John Soppe, Managing Director of King Digital, added, ?In the same way people are attracted to The New Yorker ?Caption It? contests, news sites will be able to have local competitions where the audience rates the captions a la ?American Idol?. And if sites want to run a promotional contest, ?Captionary? gives them a built-in mechanism to drive traffic and engage their users.?

Comics Kingdom, developed by King Features? Digital division and launched in November 2008, has since drawn more than 40 partners. It features King Features? complete portfolio of more than 60 strips, presented every day in full color and packaged together in one destination. The King Features roster includes such contemporary and classic favorites as ?Zits,? ?Mutts,? ?Blondie,? ?Beetle Bailey? and ?H?gar the Horrible.?
