By: E&P Staff Charles Horton has been appointed president and publisher of the Kitsap Sun in Bremerton, Wash.

Horton's most recent title was director of advertising and online operations. Former Kitsap Sun Publisher Mike Levi made the announcement Wednesday afternoon on behalf of The E.W. Scripps Co., which owns the paper. Levi retired in May, after spending nine years at the Sun.

?Under Charles? leadership, the Sun has regularly outperformed its peers in audience growth and pure-play interactive revenue growth,? Mark Contreras, senior vice president/newspapers for Scripps, told the Sun. ?His track record of innovation will allow us to quickly adapt our ever-changing business to better serve the needs of our advertisers and readers, both in print and online.?

Horton, 34, joined the Sun in 2004 as circulation director and was named director of advertising development in 2007. Horton has worked in newspapers since 1997, when he was circulation sales-manager at the Fairbanks (Alaska) News-Miner. He has also been an independent distributor at The Oregonian, and assistant circulation director of the Burlington Times News in Burlington, North Carolina.

Before joining the Sun, he was circulation director of the Goshen (Ind.) News.
