By: E&P Staff The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation have awarded new grants in an ongoing initiative to expand training for journalists.

The newest grants were awarded to:

* Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism for a four-year project to encourage the news industry to invest more money and time in the development of its employees. Called "Tomorrow's Workforce," the initiative will create measurements to help newsrooms discover what kinds of training they need.

* The American Press Institute and the American Society of Newspaper Editors for a four-year effort to push the concept of the learning, or self-training, newsroom. "It's rethinking how the newsroom operates so it can build in continuous learning," said Wisconsin State Journal Editor Frank Denton, chairman of ASNE's craft development committee.

* The Associated Press Managing Editors for "NewsTrain," a four-year traveling school to train up to 3,000 middle managers. The AP is providing funds for the project as well.

Other Knight grants were announced previously, including projects at The Poynter Institute and the Committee of Concerned Journalists. Combined, the grants total $10 million.

The training effort has been in planning since last year, when a Knight Foundation study found that eight in 10 journalist said they need more professional development.
