Knight Ridder Makes 3 Executive Appointments

By: Jennifer Saba Chip Visci, the former publisher of the San Jose Mercury News, is staying with Knight Ridder and will become publisher of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with oversight responsibility for The Herald in Monterey County. Current Tribune Publisher Maureen Saltzer is pursuing other opportunities, according to a press release.

"Chip Visci has a distinguished record in both editorial and business operations," said Art Brisbane, senior vice president at Knight Ridder, in a statement. "A former managing editor of the Detroit Free Press, he spent seven of the last eight years on the corporate staff, two of them with responsibility for 16 of the company's mid-sized and smaller newspapers. Chip is energetic, competitive, and widely admired -- he will be a great asset to these two important California newspapers."

Knight Ridder also announced today that Paula Lynn Ellis will become corporate vice president/operations, with responsibility for 11 of the company's newspapers in South Dakota, South Carolina, Minnesota, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Florida. Previously, Ellis served as president and publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She will relocate to Knight Ridder headquarters in San Jose, Calif.

Ricky Matthews, president and publisher of The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss., has been given additional responsibility for three newspapers in Bradenton, Fla., Columbus, S.C., and Macon, Ga.

Visci, Ellis, and Matthews will report to Brisbane. The appointments are effective by the end of the year.
