By: Joel Davis Saying it wants to redefine its approach to local news coverage, the
Los Angeles Times is closing three weekly community news sections and cutting 18 jobs.
The
Times is eliminating the
San Gabriel Valley Weekly, the
South Bay Weekly, and the
Westside Weekly. The 18 employees of those publications are receiving an "enhanced severance package."
"The advertising had migrated to the main paper and we also were trying to refocus our reporting on the region and stop trying to do 'block by block' coverage," Deputy Managing Editor Leo Wolinsky said. "These were sections inserted into the main paper weekly. The decision was actually quite recent and hadn't been in the works for all that long."
In May, the
Times kicked off a California section that focused on regional and local news. Since then the weeklies have lost ad revenue, some of it going to the California section.
