Dean P. Baquet, national editor of The New York Times, has been appointed
managing editor of the Los Angeles Times, effective next month.

Baquet will be responsible for all LA Times news operations, excluding the
op-ed pages, and will report to Editor and Executive Vice President John S.
Carroll. 'With this appointment, the Times will revert to a traditional
newsroom structure, with a single managing editor reporting to the editor
and overseeing all newsroom departments,' Carroll said.

In a memo to staff, Carroll said the titles of Executive Editor Leo
Wolinsky and Managing Editors John Arthur and Karen Wada would be changed
in the coming days to better reflect their positions.

Baquet, 43, joined the New York Times in 1990 as a metropolitan reporter
and held various editing positions before becoming national editor in 1995.
Prior to that, he worked for the Chicago Tribune (where he won the Pulitzer
Prize in 1988) and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.
