'L.A. Times' Redesigns Web Site -- Waves Print 'Flag'

Posted
By: Joe Strupp Just weeks after changing the name of its Sunday magazine to include "Los Angeles Times" in the title, the paper has replaced its latimes.com Web site logo with the print edition's better-known flag that includes the full name.

In a note to online users, Meredith Artley, executive editor of the Web site, explained that the change was done to give the entire news organization a united look.

"The change reflects that the Los Angeles Times is one news organization with multiple platforms," she wrote in the note. "Our designers think it lends a cleaner, more balanced look to the site."

The change comes about three weeks after the paper renamed its Sunday West magazine as Los Angeles Times Magazine. At that time, Times Spokesman Stephan Pechdimaldji told E&P, "Basically, the change brings us back to our roots with a brand name that is familiar to readers as well as to advertisers."

Artley's entire Web note is posted below:

Dear readers:

Today you'll notice a different-looking latimes.com. Most notable is our "new" flag, a gothic font that readers have associated with the Los Angeles Times for years. The change reflects that the Los Angeles Times is one news organization with multiple platforms. Our designers think it lends a cleaner, more balanced look to the site. We hope you agree.

You'll also find new navigation tools at the bottom of most pages on the site. Registered readers will find their registration name at the top of each page where they can log in and out easily.

These changes herald many other improvements that are coming to latimes.com, including the launch of a local entertainment guide, upgrades to our entertainment section, improved search capabilities, more e-mail newsletter options and enhanced mobile services.

Your feedback is always welcome.

Meredith Artley
Executive Editor, latimes.com
