'LAT' to Run Ads in Section Fronts

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Los Angeles Times is the latest paper to announce sectional front-page advertising following the moves of the Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

The ads will run across the bottom of the Calendar, Sports, Business, and Sunday Travel sections.

"We are evaluating whether similar revenue opportunities are appropriate for our other sections," Jeff Johnson, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, told the paper. "To remain competitive, we must offer advertisers innovative new ways to reach our large and influential audience."

The Los Angeles Times, which is Tribune Co.'s largest newspaper, has been experiencing declining circulation and stagnant revenue growth though executives with Tribune said that advertising revenue at the paper grew slightly in Q2 up 1%.

Tribune has been under growing pressure over the past two years, starting with the circulation scandals at Newsday and Hoy. In late May, executives announced a massive stock repurchasing program to the consternation of one of its largest shareholders, the Chandler Trusts. Representatives for the trusts have been trying to rally support among other shareholders to force a sale of the company. Rumors have also circulated that Tribune is looking to sell the Los Angeles Times.
