Lee Enterprises at Work with Handmark on Mobile Apps

By: E&P Staff Kansas City-based Handmark will develop and support mobile applications for the newspaper and online media properties of Lee Enterprises, Davenport, Iowa.

"Handmark enables us to deliver a new level of convenience for our readers, bringing instant news and information to their mobile device and opens the door for additional revenue opportunities," Lee Interactive Media Vice President Greg Schermer said in a statement.

Lee Enterprises owns more than 50 dailies and online sites and 300 specialty publications in 23 states. Its newspapers reach more than four million readers daily, its online sites attract nearly 16 million unique visits monthly, and its weeklies are distributed to more than 4.5 million households.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch was the first to launch. Its Cardinals Baseball 2010 mobile application, providing fast, convenient access to the latest Cardinals insight, gossip, breaking news and photos, is available to download for $2.99 on any iPhone, BlackBerry, Android or Windows Mobile smartphone by texting "CARDS" to 46275 or visiting STLtoday.com/apps. Similar professional and university sports apps with other local newspapers will launch in the coming months.

Handmark (www.handmarkmobileapps.com) develops and distributes mobile applications, including tablet devices such as the Apple iPad, and specializes in solutions for media companies. Its Mobile App Network also drives monetization opportunities for its partners.
