By: E&P Staff Advertising lineage at The Wall Street Journal including the newly launched Weekend Edition increased 1.1% in October compared with the same period last year. The paper benefited from growth in classified and technology advertising, partially offset by decreases in financial and general advertising.

In the classified category, lineage advanced 15.2% due to strength in real estate and other advertising. Technology lineage grew 5.4% due to gains in personal computers, office products, consumer electronics, and communications advertising.

Financial advertising lineage fell 7.9% due to weak wholesale and retail advertising offset by a gain in tombstone advertising. General advertising lineage declined 4.2%.

Year-to-date, lineage at the Journal including Weekend Edition was down 3.3%.

At Ottaway Newspapers, advertising lineage decreased 9.1% in October due to declines in auto and other classified advertising, retail and non-daily advertising. Partially offsetting these declines were gains in real estate classified and national advertising.
