MaineToday.com announced it has received $30,000 from the Pew Center for Civic Journalism in Washington, D.C., to develop community-building tools, conduct training sessions, and expand the site's outreach services.
The Pew Center, a Pew Charitable Trusts initiative, is funding civic journalism experiments. MaineToday.com qualified for its use of free community publishing software which more than 1,400 groups in Maine have used to post information online.
MaineToday.com uses KOZ.com to offer local groups the ability to post - without knowledge of HTML - their news and events, to use chat rooms, create message boards, and even receive online donations.
MaineToday.com is produced by Blethen Maine Newspapers in conjunction with News 8 WMTW. Blethen Maine Newspapers publishes the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Morning Sentinel in Waterville, and the weekly Coastal Journal in Lincoln.
