By: Mark Fitzgerald In a $40.5-million cash deal, the McClatchy Co. is buying the assets of the 17,400-circulation daily
Merced (Calif.)
Sun-Star and five nearby non-dailies from Pacific-Sierra Publishing Inc.
The transaction, announced on Thursday, is expected to be completed in January.
In a statement, Chairman and CEO Gary Pruitt said the Merced cluster is a good fit for Sacramento, Calif.-based McClatchy, which publishes the
Modesto Bee 40 miles to the south of Merced, and
The Fresno Bee, 60 miles to the north. The non-daily newspapers in the deal are the
Sierra Star in Oakhurst; the
Los Banos Enterprise; the
Chowchilla News; the
Atwater Signal; and
The Chronicle in Livingston.
Also, Trinity Holdings Inc., in Monroeville, Pa., has agreed to sell the 13,600-circulation daily
Morning Journal in Lisbon, Ohio, to Ogden Newspapers Inc., Wheeling, W.Va., for an undisclosed amount.
Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, Santa Fe, N.M., represented the sellers in both deals.
