Media General Posts July Gains

By: E&P Staff Media General reported today that total revenue for July grew 12.9% to $86.6 million compared to the same period a year ago. Excluding the four recently acquired NBC television stations acquired June 26, total revenue increased 3%.

Total revenue at the company?s Interactive Media Division advanced 39%.

Publishing Division total revenue grew 0.9%. Newspaper advertising revenue rose 1.6%, reflecting gains at the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch and Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal.

Retail revenue advanced 3.8% to $735,000. The Richmond Times-Dispatch posted a 3% increase in the category and the Winston-Salem Journal posted a 16.2% increase. Retail advertising at The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune fell 1.8%. Retail advertising revenue at the community newspaper group grew 4.3%.

Classified advertising advanced 1.3% to $320,000. At the Tampa Tribune, classified revenue was up 4%. At the Richmond Times-Dispatch it grew 2.1%. It slipped 3.6% at the Winston-Salem Journal.

National advertising revenue dropped 8.4% to $340,00. The Richmond Times-Dispatch recorded a 19.7% increase. National revenue at the Tampa Tribune and Winston-Salem Journal decreased 14.2% and 6.7% respectively.

Circulation revenue declined 6.3% to $485,000. Roughly 35% of the decline was due to the elimination of subsidies to independent carriers at several newspapers.
