Mike Hale retires after 17 years as a New York Times TV critic

Mike Hale has retired from The New York Times after 17 years as a television critic, Sarah Bahr reports in a Times Insider interview. He joined the newspaper as a Sports desk copy editor in 1995 and later worked as a television editor before becoming a critic in 2009.

In the interview, Hale reflects on the growth of streaming, the expanding demands of television criticism and the importance of performance in great television. He retired at the end of last week; the interview was published today.
