By: (AP) Craig Moon, executive vice president of Gannett Co. Inc.'s newspaper division, has been named president and publisher of
USA Today, the company announced Thursday.
Moon replaces Tom Curley, who is leaving Gannett's national newspaper to become president and chief executive officer of The Associated Press, effective June 1.
Moon has been executive vice president for the past year. From 1991 until April 2002, he served first as president and then as president and publisher of
The Tennessean in Nashville. He also was president of the Piedmont Newspaper Group of Gannett.
Moon joined Gannett in 1985 as vice president for advertising at
The Cincinnati Enquirer and
The Cincinnati Post, and later served as publisher of
The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla., and the
Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock.
"Craig Moon has the right combination of talents to lead
USA Today into the future," said Douglas H. McCorkindale, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Gannett. "His background in advertising, his skills as a publisher and his success at managing some of Gannett's best newspapers make him a uniquely qualified choice."
USA Today, the nation's largest-selling daily newspaper, is one of 100 daily papers published by Gannett in the United States. It operates separately from Gannett's newspaper division.
