Morton Surprised by 'Newsday' Correction

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Tribune Co.'s announcement last Friday that Newsday and Hoy are expected to take further steep reductions in circulation -- by thousands of copies -- has only deepened concerns by analysts.

New York's Daily News reported today that newspaper analyst John Morton was taken off-guard: "To have that many papers cut -- 100,000 -- is really startling. I've been studying newspapers since 1971, and I can't ever recall a correction of this size."

The growth potential of both papers have also come into question as the Daily News reported the latest circ numbers set Newsday back to its days during the early 1970s when the paper had similar figures.

Newsday Spokesman Stu Vincent told the News: "Newsday feels there is tremendous potential for growth both in our core market of Long Island and New York City. Despite the inappropriate behavior in our circulation department, Newsday remains the primary source of news and information for Nassau and Suffolk and the pre-eminent advertising vehicle for our customers."
