NAA OFFICERS ELECTED FOR 2000

Andrew E. Barnes, chairman and CEO of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, was elected
chairman of the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) during its annual convention
in New York this week.


Barnes succeeds William S. Morris, chairman and CEO of Morris Communications, Augusta,
Ga. Morris will remain on the NAA Board.


Other NAA Board officers elected during the convention include:
* Vice Chairman: Orage Quarles III, publisher of The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.

* Secretary: William Dean Singleton, vice chairman, president, and CEO of MediaNews
Group Inc., Denver.
* Treasurer: P. Anthony Ridder, chairman and CEO, Knight Ridder, San Jose, Calif.


Board members elected to start a two-year term include: George B. Irish, president of
Hearst Newspapers; Mary E. Junck, president and COO of Lee Enterprises Inc.; James A.
Moss, president and publisher of the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y.; Samuel C.
Wolgemuth, president and CEO of Freedom Communications Inc.; Robert C. Woodworth,
president and CEO of Pulitzer Inc.



Those re-elected for two-year terms include: Betty Berryman, publisher, The Winchester
(Ky.) Sun; Alan M. Horton, senior vice president/newspapers, E.W. Scripps Co.; Robert M.
Jelenic, chairman, president, and CEO of Journal Register Co.; Boisfeuillet Jones,
president and general manager of The Washington Post; Roger S. Kintzel, publisher of The
Atlanta Journal and Constitution; Robert M. McCormick, publisher and COO, The Press of
Atlantic City, N.J.; Michael Parta, publisher of Parta Newspapers Inc., New York Mills,
Minn.; Gary B. Pruitt, president and CEO of The McClatchy Co.; Julie Inskeep Walda, vice
president of The Journal Gazette, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Gary L. Watson, president/newspaper
division, Gannett Co. Inc.
