By: A Fallon newspaper that has served Churchill County and surrounding areas for 105 years is cutting back the number of days it publishes each week.
Effective October first, the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard will publish three days a week - Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Purchased by Swift Newspapers in 2003, it currently publishes Tuesday through Sunday.
Publisher Keven Todd says the paper will continue to post daily news updates and other features on its Web site. He says it was a difficult decision but that the changes are necessary because of an unprecedented increase in the cost of newsprint and what he calls the "overall realities of our current economy."
Todd says the move also will help avert the need to reduce news staff at the paper. He estimates that most days the newspaper will average 28 to 36 pages compared with the current 16 to 24 pages a day.
