By: Newly minted Publisher Tim Knight told Newsday employees that based on a meeting he held Wednesday with about 100 transportation supervisors, drivers, and support staff, he is accelerating a plan of action.
In a letter addressed to staffers released this afternoon, Knight said he was disturbed by what he heard and that he received ?greater insight into a climate that allowed a number of our circulation problems to exist? with little consideration for customer needs.? Drivers and distributors complained to Knight about the current delivery systems especially where single copies are concerned.
Based on that information, Knight implemented new steps to better relations and to better account for circulation.
Thse included: Instituting a new form to account for draws for single copy dealers; assigning more supervisors and circulation sales reps to oversee billing and collection; investing in new technology to track returns and new equipment to speed up delivery; establishing regular meetings with transportation staff; examining how other papers distribute their products.
Knight said that it was painful to hear about the issues he was confronted with but was thankful for the ?candid exchange.?
