New Newspapers on the Web: Part 1

By: Steve Outing

As many of you know, for some time I have maintained a database of online newspaper services listing hundreds of cyberspace ventures by newspaper companies, which is part of Editor & Publisher Interactive's Web site. Keeping track of this activity has been difficult; the growth of the business has been so great that it's extremely challenging to catalog it all. For the past several weeks, I had fallen behind in updating the database, so today and in the coming days I will list here some of the new newspaper sites that have appeared on the World Wide Web recently.

Editor & Publisher is adding personnel to the effort to maintain this database, and in the near future the Online Newspaper Services Resource Directory will be totally revamped. In addition to providing more data about each online newspaper service, advanced searching and agenting capabilities will be added to the site. E&P Research, which maintains the widely used and widely respected Editor & Publisher Yearbook and other E&P databases, will be able to do a thorough job of insuring that the online services database is up to date and comprehensive. Also, we will soon add a Web form with which you will be able to easily update your listing.

The directory will be tied to the Editor & Publishers Members Network, and we will make announcements about the new and improved newspaper new media directory in the next few weeks. Much of the information will remain free, although some new data collected by E&P Research may be accessible only if you are a Members Network member.

So, for today, may I suggest that you surf the Web and check out some of these newly introduced U.S. newspaper online services. Tomorrow I'll be back with a list of services from other countries.

An outstanding media resource

Globe and Mail (Toronto, Canada) reporter Mathew Ingram has created a very nice page of media-related links that he calls The High-Tech Reader. He maintains the page "purely out of personal interest," and has created an excellent resource for finding the best new media resources on the Web.
